This manual serves as a practical guide to how AFC systematically embeds environmental and social (E&S) risk management across all its financing activities, including project finance, trade finance, and intermediary transactions. It sets out the procedures for risk screening, categorization, due diligence, and ongoing monitoring, ensuring alignment with international benchmarks such as the Equator Principles, IFC Performance Standards, and AfDB Safeguards. The manual further explains AFC’s approach to risk classification, the development of Environmental and Social Action Plans (ESAPs), and the integration of compliance requirements into financing agreements, thereby strengthening accountability, supporting clients in advancing their E&S performance, and fostering sustainable infrastructure development across Africa.
